As designers creating customized business graphics for print and online, we like to think of ourselves as artists being commissioned by the very left-brained business world. Obviously to be a designer you have to be somewhat gifted artistically, but more importantly, trained. I will say that not all graphic and web designers are artists and vice versa. It's an assumption a lot of people make, some are indeed, but a lot of artists never cross into the graphic and web design world. While many working designers don't have time to develop their artistic craft after a day of work.
All that said, we love art on this design blog. I mean LOVE art. We admire it, search for it, take pictures of it, are inspired by it, I could go on and on. So when I stumbled across Steven Vigil's art on facebook, I just fell in love. The medium is quite simple, sketching, ink, and watercolor, but his use of watercolor is what is intriguing. Watercolor has always been a challenging medium to make look real, but in Vigil's case he abstracts his subject so it doesn't matter if it looks real. What creates interest is the use of colors and technique. The watercolor has been made to look like it's dripping or has been splattered, yet the artist still uses lighting techniques. The final pieces end up looking vibrant and mesmorizing, which is why I'm writing and sharing him today.
